Gladys Oelkers Tietz was born on March 4, 1922 to Russell and Maren (Olsen) Oelkers. She was raised on the family farm east of Culbertson, MT, along with her twelve brothers and sisters. Gladys was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Culbertson.

After graduating from Culbertson High School, Gladys and her sister, Ruth, went to California to work at a factory for the war effort. Upon her return from California, Gladys worked as a telephone operator.
While attending a dance at the Culbertson Armory she met Dan Tietz, the man of her dreams. They were married December 18, 1948, and went on to have a wonderful marriage spanning 63 years. Dan and Gladys lived on their farm northwest of Culbertson until they moved into town in 1986.

Gladys was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed attending WELCA, teaching both Sunday school and bible school. Gladys was also a volunteer at the Culbertson Museum and Food Bank for many years, and she enjoyed time spent with friends at the Senior Citizens Center.

Baking Norwegian “goodies” and delicious home cooked meals were her specialties. She always welcomed guests and family with freshly baked treats. Some of her favorite hobbies were sewing, jigsaw puzzles, playing pinochle, and making crafts. Gladys adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and always tried to attend all of their activities.

Gladys passed away surrounded by her family on July 22, 2012 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings.

Gladys is survived by her husband, Dan; two children, Tom (Shirley) Tietz and Laura (Larry) Bergum; grandchildren, Angela (Ryan) Lindley, Chris (Vecta) Tietz, Julie (Brad) Collins, Eric (Cassandra) Bergum, Deanna (Matt) Monson, and Jessica Tietz; and twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruth (Howard) Iverson, Betty McGinnis, Marion Wolff; and brothers, Russell Oelkers, Marvin (Hulda) Oelkers, Ray Oelkers, and Donald (Myrna) Oelkers.

She was preceded in death by her parents (Russell and Maren); her sisters, Alice Oelkers, Leona Young, and Ann Ueland; and her brothers, Floyd Oelkers and Stanley Oelkers.
