It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
John Martin Hilleren
September 4, 1927 - September 15, 2016

Place of Birth: Tioga, ND
Residence: Tioga, ND
Age: 89

John Martin Hilleren was born in Tioga, North Dakota in 1927 to Henry and Inga Hilleren. He passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the age of 89 at the Long Term Care facility in Tioga.

After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, John and wife Delores settled in Williston, ND to raise their family. John traveled all over the northwest countryside as a salesman for Thomas Auto Parts and could still recall the names of nearly all the early homesteaders in the region. He loved cars and even more, loved a good 'fixer-upper' that he would tinker on and then resell.

John and Delores took great pride in their lawn and flowers and spent their summer evenings and weekends watering, mowing, planting and weeding together. Red geraniums were always on display. In 1985 they moved to Alexandria, MN where John opened up Big John's Fix It and spent his days repairing motors. John's AA buddies were dear friends, and along with his cat KC, provided constant support to him after Delores passed away in June 2010. Later, John decided it was time to go 'home' and moved back to Tioga in May 2015.

He is survived by his children: Daughter Sandy (Tim) Towers - Nashville, TN; Son Mark (Daphne) Hilleren - Watford City, ND; Stepdaughter Lana (Rick) Ensrud - Brooklyn Park, MN; Stepson Glenn (Linda) Herreid - Hiawassee, GA; Daughter Linda (Gene) Reed - Christiansburg, VA; Sister Inez Stenbak - Tioga, ND; as well as many grand and great grandchildren.

Family and friends will always think of him munching on M&M's and enjoying an ice cold Diet Coke. And, we're pretty sure that's exactly what he's doing now. Funeral Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Tioga - the same church he was baptized and confirmed in - on Wednesday, September 21 at 11am with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Graveside service and burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston, ND where he will be laid to rest next to his wife Delores.

I just had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman within this last month. Of course when he told me his name I asked about him being related to Jenny. He just beamed with pride and went on to talk about Zander and having Mark around his little finger. I teased him about his joking personality and he went on to kid around even more. You have lost a wonderful man and my condolences to you all at this time. Remember his smile and teasing ways. I know I will remember him that way. I had hoped to chat with him again.

Many wonderful memories of John and Delores. Brian enjoyed their AA encounters. We enjoyed visiting with him and always admired his tinkering ability and quest for socializing.

What a smart man ! It only goes to show just because we have a 'little' age on us doesn't mean we are useless. We were created to live forever yet because of death our lives are cut short. Our Heavenly Father's promise will very soon do away with death. Enjoy reading this in Revelation 21:3-5. jw.org

John leaves a big void for all of us left behind. He and I were given the gift of sobriety about the same time. His gentle demeanor and that twinkle in his eyes will be remembered by me and my fellow members in the " program ". He shared his experience, strength and hope with us and did it with dignity and respect.
We both were retired military and both left Alexandria in the spring of 2015. He went west and I went east.
I lived out of state from 2002 through 2013. When I returned to Alec, I met a man who had recently lost the love of his life. Now he must be wearing that wonderful smile and sporting that twinkle in his eyes.
I salute my military brother and may his soul rest in peace.
With deepest sympathy and respect,
Mark Roers

John and I went through treatment at the old Marion together. I just remember all his wisdom and no nonsense approach to the program that helped a lot of people. We shared our birthday sept 4 and the fact we were both regular navy and became very good friends. Rest in peace big guy!

Our sympathy to you, Sandy, for the loss of your father. Al knew your Dad through the shop, and thought he was a really nice guy, and a great talker! I never met your Dad, but I can tell by looking at his photo that he must have been a peach. You are in our thoughts and prayers. AAE

Mark, Sandy, Lana and Glenn So very sorry to hear of Johns passing. I have great memories of both he and your mom while growing up. I remember him as a talented and funny guy with much more patience than he should have had with Mark and me. Take comfort in knowing he is with your mom now.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I loved both John and Delores. When Lindy was born, they were so happy for us to get a little girl. They both were loved by many. Love, Kori
