Julia L. Enman, 92, of Culbertson Mt, passed away at the Roosevelt Medical Center, Culbertson, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. Her funeral arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Williston.
Julia Louise Carlson was born October 16, 1924, in Roundup, Montana, to Gertrude (Madlung) and Carl Hjalmer Carlson. Julia was the fourth child of eleven.
She spent her early childhood in Roundup and attended schools in Roundup and Klein Montana.
After high school, she married Minard Larson in 1942. Two daughters blessed this marriage, Myleen Joan and Barbara Ann.
In 1953, Julia graduated from Eastern Montana College of Education. While teaching in Livingston, Montana, she met Wellington Enman. The two married on August 7, 1954.
Julia and Wellington moved to Hall, Montana, where they ranched. Daughters Kayl Jhnett and Merna Ellyn were born while the couple lived in Hall and ranched with Wellington’s parents. Julia was a working mother, teaching, parenting, and helping out on the ranch. She was an accomplished cook and seamstress.
In 1962, Julia returned to her teaching career as an elementary teacher in Philipsburg, Montana. She taught there for several years and then taught in Drummond, Montana. After many years of teaching, she returned to school to obtain her Masters in Education Administration from the University of Montana. Her career then took a turn, as she became the Granite County Superintendent of Schools, a position she held for twelve years.
Julia’s love for education spilled over into all aspects of her life. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was a director of many committees. She enjoyed meeting and visiting with other educators during her DKG years.
After retirement from education, Julia was a devoted volunteer at the Drummond Public Library and the Drummond Senior Citizens.
Julia loved to travel. Her travels included Scotland, Australia, Alaska, Hawaii, the lower 48 states, Prince Edward Island, and the Olympics in Calgary.
Julia was widowed upon Wellington’s death in August of 1998.
In the fall of 2009, Julia moved to Culbertson, Montana, where she resided until her death.
Julia loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a willing and able babysitter of the “grands” when they were young. Julia and Welly enjoyed traveling around the state to attend many of their grandchildren’s activities.
Julia fiercely met every challenge in her life. In her later years, with failing eyesight, she was determined to remain active and engaged. She never stopped learning. She never complained. She often said, “Don’t be afraid of growing old; it’s kind of fun—if you can laugh at yourself.” And she did. Julia also said, “Never run out of ice cream!”
Julia is survived by daughters: Myleen (Ken) Clawson, Barbara (Dan) Anderson, Kayl (Ron) Arthun, and Merna (Kirk) Panasuk; granddaughters: Lori (Scott) Lennemann, Bonni (Trever) Priddy, Dana (Doug) Kopp, Kris (Rob) Clawson, Megan (Jeff) Evans, Haley (James) Dunkel, Kirsten Arthun, Shelly (Gy) Salvevold, Casie Panasuk, Sasha (Nathan) Panasuk, Darla (Doug) Mork and 18 great grandchildren.
Julia is also survived by sisters Myra Solberg, Cora Campbell, Ann Brenchley, brother Paul Carlson, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings: Vic Carlson, Viola Paulus, Jack Carlson, Carleen Egge, Gertrude (Bert) Sweten, and Albert Carlson.
