It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
Henry Christ Halvorson
March 18, 1917 - November 13, 2018

Place of Birth: Big Stone Twnshp, Williams County, ND
Residence: Williston, ND formerly of Alamo, ND
Age: 101

Henry Halvorson was born March 18, 1917, to Harold and Bertina Halvorson in a tar paper shack five miles southeast of Alamo, ND. He attended school in Big Stone Township until the 6th grade. Henry was baptized and confirmed in the Free Lutheran Church in Alamo, North Dakota.

At the age of two, Henry and his brother, Clifford both contracted polio. He was sent to the Shriners hospital in St. Louis, Missouri at the age of seven where he couldn’t speak English when he was admitted and couldn’t speak Norwegian when he was discharged.

When Henry was ten years old, he decided to take after the older kids that were trapping skunks. He found a trap and set it. After school he had a skunk in it, but didn’t have anything to kill it with so he used a stick. His dad took it to Wildrose and Henry received $2.50. With his profits he ordered a pair of overalls, a shirt and a pair of shoes.

At the age of 18 he worked for farmers. He then went to Wichita, Kansas and worked as ‘Rosie the Riveter’ in a defense plant building B29 bombers. He worked there four years and after the war he began farming and ranching.

At the age of 30, Henry married Lucy Olson in 1951. Together they had one son, Merle. They had a good life. They traveled on the Senior Citizen tours to the east and southeast coasts, as well as the west and to Alaska and Norway. Henry retired from farming in the mid 1980’s. Both Lucy and Henry entered Bethel in 2007. He lost his bride in the summer of 2011.

He served on numerous boards.

Henry loved his toys, which started out with model tractors that he had owned and went on to horse drawn equipment. Of all the equipment and vehicles Henry has ever owned, his motorized chair is the one he appreciated the most.

He is survived by his son, Merle (special friend, Jennifer) of Alamo; brother, Edwin and his wife Helen of Spokane, WA; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Henry was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife Lucy; his parents, Harold and Bertina Halvorson; sisters, Dagny (Willie) Weston, Helena (Raymond) Ring, Ruth (Dale) Kroshus, Harriet Halvorson and; brothers, Clifford (Ruth), Lenard (Rose) and Trigve (Ann) Halvorson.

Merle, my sincere sympathy to you and the rest of the Halvorson family on your father's passing. I didn't realize he was over 100. What a life well lived. He was always so happy and chatty. I am sure he was ready to be reunited with sweet Lucy. Rest in peace, Henry.

We always enjoyed Henry's insightful conversations! He was a very intelligent man who understood any subject. We would ALL do well to emulate his compassion towards others - he lived his life by the "Golden Rule".

Merle and family, please accept my sympathy. I have an interesting story of your dad and my mother, Florence Treider Slais, I want to share with you. I got to know your father when he was living at Bethel. You see he and my mother were childhood friends and were in Bethel together until my mother past away in 2014. I would always hear the story of how your father's mother was my mother's mother's midwife when my mother was born on March 25, 1917, just a week after your father was born. They always enjoyed telling me that and that they had remained friends all these years. It is one story I will treasure about my mother and your father. God blest our parents with friendship. Henry was always on the go - whizzing by on his scooter. I’ll miss his shiny smile while I was heating up his leftover pizza and whatnot. Happy scooting in Heaven, Henry, and hope you enjoy God’s Angels’ cooking!! Maybe they’ll make pizza!!!

Henry was a hero: Together with his beloved wife he was farming in Alamo, and he had to work hard for hole his life.In 1972 he and Lucy visited har family in Hattfjelldal Norway. It was a real great moment for the hole family there. Lycy`s father Bernt had lot of siblings and it was many og relatives celebrating the reunion, and Lucey and my mother had a close friendship after that,
In 1999 I and my niese Marit went over to North Dakota to visit Lucy and Family
Ae came to Alamo a late afternoon a day in September. After a while Henry came out to meet us. I could see he was moved. he was the first perosn I met in USA as family.
We had two weeks at their house wich I never will forget. We got friendship for ever.
we came back in 2000 and 2011. Lucy and Henry were very good friends and relatives. We spent always good times together. Henry was real hero, fighting every day. We kept in touch with telephone an he told me how much he was missing his Lucy. Now they both can rest in heaven and we will never, never forget. Thank you for all good memories. I love you..

Merle and family,
Sorry to hear of Henry passing. I always enjoyed visiting with him at the elevator. I last visited him at Bethel about a year ago and thought to myself how interesting to visit with someone 100 years old that had a better memory than me. He was a good man.
