It Is Our Privilege And Purpose To Serve You
Ruby E. Chernenko
July 14, 1929 - February 14, 2019

Place of Birth: Halliday, ND
Residence: New Town, ND
Age: 89

Ruby Eve Chernenko, 89, was called home to be with our Lord and Savior, February 14, 2019. She was born July 14, 1929 to Theodore and Dorothea (Frei) Witt in Halliday, ND. After living in Elbowoods for a few years, the family moved to Grassy Butte as the construction of the Garrison Dam flooded Elbowoods.
On June 5th, 1952 she married Alec Chernenko, the love her life. He was quite literally “the boy next door.” They were married for 42 years and had 3 children: Ronald, Denise, and Shirley. She was a fiercely independent woman and taught all of us to be the same. She was always one to lend a hand and would teach anyone who wanted to learn. Except for the pickles. She tried to teach us… they never turned out for us.
Alec and Ruby loved to dance, fish, and spend time with friends and family. There were many games of cards played at the kitchen table. One of Ruby’s favorite games was cribbage. If you didn’t count your points, she would make sure she took them. However, if you took her points, you welcomed that friendly punch to the arm and “HEY NOW!” In June 2015 she out fished a boat full of family and friends when landing the infamous “log,” also known as the 8 pound walleye! She was so excited and kept saying “I can’t believe it!” It was the biggest fish she ever caught. Among her other many talents were gardening, quilting, and baking. One of her Juneberry pies once sold for $300! Jokingly dubbed the “Cabbage Queen of Grassy Butte” it wasn’t unheard of for her to grow 10-15 pound cabbages! One summer day, Ruby was working in her beloved garden. From the top of the hill, Shirley noticed that Ruby unknowingly planted her corn rows in the shape of a cross.

Ruby gave to everyone she knew. She gave her time, her love, and many homemade goods. She grew enough produce to feed the neighbors, quilted enough to keep everyone warm, and loved her family like none other. Her quilts, afghans, and doilies have been gifted among many family members and friends. Heaven has certainly gained an Angel.
Ruby leaves behind: one sister, Linda Watson, Mesa, AZ; a son, Ronald Chernenko (Colleen Rask) Grassy Butte, ND; two daughters, Denise Tibbs (Harold Hugelen) Belfield, ND, and Shirley Pennington (Jerry) New Town, ND; five grandchildren, Andrea Enderle (Norman) Keene, ND, Ryan Pennington, Seattle, WA, Michele Pennington, New Town, ND, Kyle Chernenko (Karley), Grassy Butte, ND, and Darren Chernenko (Desirae Feland), Bismarck, ND; four Great-Grandchildren, Jacob and Madison Enderle, Mia and Finley Chernenko; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Ruby is preceded in death by: her parents Theodore and Dorothea Witt; husband Alec Chernenko; sister Esther; brothers Raymond and his wife Delores, Edwin and his wife Jeanette, Elton and his wife Virginia, Gene; and daughter-in-law Kathy Chernenko.

We loved Ruby. So sorry to hear of her passing from my mother Delores. My father and I used to fight over the awesome pickles she used to give to us. No one could jar pickles like she could. What a wonderful person to be around. She will be missed.

Our love and prayers to Ruby's kids and family. She was a light and loved her spit fire energy but most of all her unconditional kindness to all. There are going to be a lot of cribbage gc games going on in heaven.

I was saddened to hear of Ruby’s passing. I remember those days when my mother and I stayed at Uncle Daves. My fondest memories were of spending long summer days riding horseback with Denise, Ronny, and “sometimes” Shirley! I still remember some of the shenanigans we pulled during branding! Ruby always welcomed me into the fold and I was not exempt from doing some of the chores she required from her children! Ruby was no stranger to hard work as she toiled in her garden, milked cows, canned, sewed, and attempted to “manage” three spirited kids! I loved spending time at Chernenkos and I’m grateful that I never drove into the creek at the bottom of the hill leading to her house! I have many wonderful memories of life in the beautiful Badlands and the opportunity to spend time with the Chernenkos!
My condolences to Denise, Ronny, Shirley and your families.
Love, Linda ????

Ruby was an amazing lady. I remember us going there as kids when we butchered. Sleeping on a pile of coats and playing cards to all hours of the morning. Yes her pickles were amazing. She will be missed!!!

What great memories in this beautiful remembrance of Ruby. It has been a bittersweet stroll down memory lane remembering the many hours spent learning, doing and playing with Ruby when I was young. Having your family as neighbors meant more than you'll ever know.

A candle burns today in honor and support of your family during this transition. Blessings to each of you and prayers for Ruby's peaceful return home.
