So very sorry for your loss. I graduated with Randy and served with him on the USCGC UNIMAK. I have many fond memories of my time with him.

The Holy Spirit moves in ways we simply cannot comprehend.

We play a mind-numbing mobile app game. We join groups, and create teams. Players and teams get to know each other, bonds are made, camaraderie is developed, and in some cases friendships are forged.

And then life happens.

Randy was among the game’s very best, and we were privileged to have him on our squad, “Combat Veterans.” Our squad is built around our common bond as Veterans, where Randy was a very real leader, teacher, mentor and counselor.

When he began his battle with cancer, his battle cry became “embrace the suck” which in military circles means to control the “suck,” rather than become a victim of it. He lived that battle cry to the very end.

Last Summer, our squad embarked on an endeavor that no other squad has done; we organized a squad retreat where players would gather in person and get to know each other in person, and for real. In our planning, we knew that Randy would be finishing up his chemotherapy at about the time of the retreat. We didn’t know how strong he would be, and as one put it, “if he can’t come to the mountain, we’ll bring the mountain to him!”

So, in total secrecy from Randy, we had everything planned to stage the retreat at a campground 12 miles south of Watford City. We talked to the Park Ranger, and we were going to invite the local Veterans out to meet us and Randy. Everything was set until he told us that he and his family would be traveling to Alabama at that very time!

So, we shifted the plan once again! Eventually, we moved the retreat back a couple weeks, and the Retreat was held in Big Timber, Montana. Randy was there, he was strong, and he was humbled that we dedicated the retreat in his honor. He seemed to have a really good time. When we went into the Crazy Mountains on a short hike to the Big Timber River Falls, Randy was rigidly determined to trek up the trail to the perch at the very top of the Falls. He made it all the way, and was able to signal down to us below. He came back a little scraped and bruised, but none the worst for wear, and refreshed at meeting the challenge he set for himself.

In our game community, news of Randy’s passing spread like wild fire, and within hours we organized a series of Tribute Battles which are on-going right now, as this is being read to you. Hundreds upon hundreds of fellow players who knew Randy—and hundreds more who didn’t—were all wearing his player name exactly as he wore it.

On behalf of our squad, and the entire game community, we extend our prayers for healing and peace to all who mourn Randy Scott.

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Godspeed Randy Scott, a great classmate and gentleman; always willing to pitch in to get the job done. Prayers for all of his family and my condolences on your loss. You will be missed shipmate.

Randy was a beloved classmate from the USCGA Class of 1983. He always had a big smile, and an even bigger heart. His life leaves a long, wide wake. Farewell, my friend.

Randy was my dear friend and spiritual mentor after I gave my life to Christ. Randy was my Classmate, Shipmate, and Roommate. I will miss him until I see him again in Glory. My condolences to Debbie and his wonderful children. I plan to attend Randy’s service on April 15 and look forward to sharing in the celebration of Randy’s life while on earth and now in Heaven.

Randy positively impacted my life as a great friend and spiritual leader. I was very blessed by the time I spent with him at CGA, on the Unimak, and in Mobile. His courage and deep faith in Jesus while facing & battling challenges is a shining example to me.
