Ardelle Leora Vaira
February 10, 1925 - May 14, 2016

Place of Birth: Richey, Montana
Residence: Sidney Montana
Age: 91

Ardelle Vaira was born on February 10, 1925 in Richey, MT to parents Celia (Olson) and Wilbur Gibson. At age 1 she and her family moved to Indiana. She had many fond memories of her time there playing with friends in the woods, swimming in the lake and enjoying all the different trees and flowers that she loved, even as a child. In 1935, her family moved back to Richey where she attended school and graduated in 1944. Ardelle worked at the Richey Meat Market and was a waitress at her families cafe, The Gibson Cafe, in Richey
One day Ardelle was selling poppies for the Veteran's and a handsome man, Paul Vaira, came by and offered her one dollar for a poppy. She gave him a poppy and later, her hand in marriage, on August 12, 1950. Paul and Ardelle made their home at Spring Lake for almost 60 years where they farmed, ranched and raised their family. They moved to Sidney, and in July of 2015, Ardelle moved to the Sidney Extended Care where she has lived since.
Ardelle was an artist and loved to paint pictures. At age 60, she took classes after which she painted pictures that now hang in the homes of many of her family and friends. She also cut and fixed hair for many of the neighbor ladies in her home. Ardelle loved dogs, horses and animals of any kind and was always on the lookout for a special pet for one of her grandchildren. She loved to garden and to work in her yard. Her special joy, though, were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to have them around her, and she spent many hours faithfully following them in all of their many activities.
Ardelle attended the First Lutheran Church in Lambert, WIFE, Mona Homemakers, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She served on the board of the Matthew House in Sidney.
Ardelle died Saturday afternoon, May 14, 2016 at the Sidney Health Center Extended Care Facility.
Survivors include: her husband, Paul, Lambert, MT; her sons, Collin (Cheryl) Vaira, Lambert, MT, Tim (Jean) Vaira, Billings, MT, Kelly (Jen) Vaira, Lambert, MT and Pat Vaira of Savage, MT; her sister, Wanda (Alan) Tofte, Sidney, MT; her 10 grandchildren, Anthony (Sara) Vaira, Thomas Vaira, Sean Vaira, Gillette Vaira, Rochelle (Nick) Griffin, Chase Vaira, Kyle Vaira, Amy (Greg) Loder, Angela Vaira, and Michael Vaira; her 8 great-grandchildren and one coming in June; numerous nieces and nephews.

We are so very sad for you today as you remember Ardelle. She was such a sweet lady, always had a sparkle in her eye, a lovely smile, and adored her family. Though we all know she is in a beautiful place now, it's so hard to lose those that make up the truest part of our family, our memories, and what feels like home. Ardelle was and always will be a cherished part of our community, and I hope your fond memories with her and the place she has in all our hearts helps your grieving turn into a celebration of her life with time. Bless you all, and know that we send our hugs and prayers!

While I only met Ardelle three times, there are two things that I will remember about her. She had a very sweet, gentle spirit and beautiful twinkling eyes.

While Bob and I only know a small portion of the Vaira family, our heartfelt sympathy goes out to ALL of you.

She will be sorely missed, but her great legacy will live on in her four sons, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. They are a wonderful legacy to leave for our world.

I have so many great memories of Ardele and am so sad to hear of her passing. She was my second ‘mom’ and helped me become the person I am today.
The first time I ever saw anything born, Ardele and I were together watching her little dog Pepper having puppies. Ardele was just as excited as I was watching the puppies being born.
About the same time, I was maybe 12 years old, I accidentally broke a gallon jug of cooking oil on the floor of the basement kitchen. Her first reaction was laughter! She kept laughing as we tried to keep the oil from running under the stove. I learned that laughter is the best way to handle many sticky situations.
Once, I road my horse to visit and found an almost dead kitten only a few weeks old along the way. Ardele got an eye dropper and we tried feeding the poor little thing. The kitten wouldn’t take milk or rice or several other things we tried. Finally, Ardele opened a can of tuna and the kitty drank a little of the oil. Ardele and I enjoyed the tuna sandwiches too! The kitten was saved and Ardele helped me persuade my mom to let me keep it as a house pet.
I remember my Mom, Sharon and Ardele being together often. Their hands preparing food or working on some project or other and their love and support of each other. Most of all I remember them laughing, and laughing and laughing!
