Betty Lambert passed away from congestive heart failure on Monday, January 23, 2017. Betty Lou McKenzie was born on June 23, 1936 to Melvin and Mabel McKenzie. Born and raised in Medicine Lake, she attended elementary school there until 1953 when Betty’s family moved to Richey, Montana where they operated a restaurant. After graduating high school from Richey in 1954, Betty moved to Plentywood to work for the Mountain Bell Telephone Service. She later moved to Culbertson, Montana and began working as a waitress and cook in a local restaurant. During this time, she met and fell in love with the man who would be her husband until her death.
Betty met Verle Lambert in the fall of 1954 and they were married in May of 1955. To this union, six children were born: Natalie Jo, Joseph Melvin, James Dean, Connie Jean, Jerome Cletus, and Jeffrey Brian. Betty worked at various jobs in Culbertson including: the Roosevelt County Extension Office and Prairie Pipeline & Construction. Throughout her lifetime, Betty was involved in many clubs and organizations. She served as officer in the local Jayceens; was a den mother and scout leader for both girls and boys scouting programs; and was a volunteer/leader for many years with the Eager Beavers 4-H club. The ultimate bowler, mom won numerous awards and team trophies for that sport in the 60’s and 70’s until an accident caused her to abandon the sport she loved. Betty enjoyed playing cards and in her younger years, gathered weekly with friends and family to play Rummy, Bridge and Pinochle. Another favorite pastime was solving crossword puzzles, and she completed this activity each morning with her cup of coffee. Betty was a successful Avon dealer for many years, earning many awards and eventually winning the prestigious President’s Award. Mom was an excellent homemaker, creating many beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other family members and friends. She crocheted, stitched, embroidered, and sewed together beautiful linens, doilies, clothing, blankets, quilts, kitchen cloths, pot holders, and many other items. In her early years, mom fashioned together elaborate items in ceramics, needlepoint, painting, and Artex. Most recently, she kept herself busy making lovely greeting cards. We all have at least one card that she created with much love.
As a homemaker, Betty was a fantastic cook, and we can still smell the aroma of fresh-baked cinnamon rolls! She had a special talent for gardening, paying special attention to her many flowers. She always had a plant or two in her home and especially took pride in her flower beds in her yard and garden. Betty’s flower arrangements were the envy of many flower shops!
Mom had a great sense of humor, even up until the time of her death. Being brought into the Christian faith, mom loved her family very much, caring unconditionally for all! She is preceded in death by her mother and father; son, Joseph; siblings, Duncan, Donny, Lorraine, and Melvin; sister and brothers-in-law, Joe Lambert, Phoebe and Arlie Larsen, Vernie Brenden, Andy Lambert, Richard Wirth, and Allen Lambert; niece and nephews, Rick Gobin, Larry Wayne, Rick Wirth, Curtis Brenden, and Kathy Larsen.
