Holly Geneva Washburn
August 31, 1950 - November 26, 2017

Place of Birth: North Dakota
Residence: Watford City, North Dakota
Age: 67

Holly Geneva (Dahl) Washburn, aged 67, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in rural Watford City, ND, on Sunday, November 26, 2017.

Holly Geneva (Dahl) Washburn was born on August 31, 1950 in Williston, North Dakota, the youngest child of Norman and Mildred (Wold) Dahl. The family made their home in Watford City where she attended school through grade 12, graduating in 1968 from WCHS. Later she graduated from Moorhead State University with a degree in education.

As a young lady she enjoyed helping out on the farm and developed a fascination for horses. This led to her competing in Rodeo for several years. Holly started her teaching career in Montana and followed that with 24 years in Medora, North Dakota. While in Medora, she started a bumper car business which occupied her time between school years. She was also active in civic affairs.

Holly returned to her home town of Watford City and taught for two more years and then in Mandaree for one year. As a retiree, she enjoyed golfing and bowling, was active in bell Choir, Church Choir, and was hooked on gardening.

In 2006 Holly met a man who shared her love of gardening and it would lead to her marriage to Dale Washburn on December 26, 2007, which was also her parent’s anniversary. They initially made their home in Watford City and later moved to the farm in a new home. Rumor has it they supplied vegetables and canned goods to their families and half of McKenzie County. Their farm was also home to dogs, cats, horses and Black Angus cattle.

The only time there was a divided household it revolved around their loyalties to their favorite NFL teams. Holly was a lifelong Vikings fan and Dale was a Packer backer. When those two teams met it provided for an interesting household. One of their favorite trips was to Green Bay to see Brett Favre return in a Viking uniform. Once again, Holly won out.

In her later years, she was very proud of the fact that in getting married she also became a mother and grandmother. Her generous spirit, caring attitude and sense of humor were enjoyed by her new family in the same way she had affected people her entire life. At the same time she could be tough when it was warranted.

Holly is survived by her husband, Dale; sister, Myrna of Bismarck, ND; brother, Curtis of Hettinger, ND and his family. Also, her nephews, Norman (Amy) Dahl of Mandan, ND and Chuck Dahl of Bismarck, ND and their families. Brett Washburn of Alpharetta, GA and Heather Washburn of Portland, OR are her legally adopted children. Three Washburn grandchildren also survive her.

Holly is also survived by sister-in-law Denise Grantier and brother-in-law Chris (Marcia) Washburn, aunt Nyla Dahl and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Holly was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Mildred Dahl and in-laws, Lyle and Anne Washburn.

I could hardly believe the news when I got the call. Our dear little flower girl and later dear friend, will be forever missed by all of us. She was a caring, sharing, wonderful neighbor and friend. I am so glad we had a good visit just before we came to AZ. We are sad we won't be able to attend her memorial but you will be in our hearts and prayers. May God hold you in his arms now and forever. Love to you all. Elaine and Gene

Dear Dale, Myrna and Curtis,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Holly's death. She was indeed a bright light whose fun loving spirit, quick wit and generous ways blessed many including me. It seems like yesterday that I officiated at your wedding, Dale and we had Prime Rib with her mother in attendance. What a happy day for her and all of us. I'm glad you've had each other since that time. They were great years for two of God's beloved children. She will be greatly missed by many there as well as the lives she touched here in Medora and Billings County. God bless and keep you all knowing that the love she gave and the gifts she shared still touches many. May God's love continue to touch each of you.

I have good memories of Holly Dahl as my teacher in DeMores Grade School in Medora. She taught in the 5th-8th grade classroom.. She was very artistic and we did fun art projects. She also read to the classroom every afternoon. I have reread many of the novels she read aloud to us. I think she sparked my love for reading! May she rest In Peace.

Rest In Peace dear Holly. We had so many good times during our school years in Watford City. Because we were both named Holly, you were ‘big Holly’ and I was ‘little holly’! Your laughter was contagious and you were so much fun to be around. Watford was the ideal small town back then, we knew everyone! You will be missed, my friend.

I am so sorry to hear of Holly's death. She and I played tennis together in a small Medora tennis tournament in 1979 and I knew her throughout the early 1980s. When I returned to Medora in 2003, we reconnected until she moved away. My thoughts are with all of her family and friends.

Holly was one of the first people I got to know when we moved to Watford City in 1966, just across the street from the Dahls. She was kind and full of fun. And she looked out for my Mom and Dad in their later years. Shocked to learn of Holly's unexpected passing, I want to express the sadness in my heart to Dale, Myrna and family and Curtis and family. Remembering Holly with a smile, and celebrating the life of a wonderful, caring friend and neighbor.

Dale & family,
So sorry for your loss. Holly always put a smile on our faces and you could always feel her love by how she always made you feel welcome, especially when the boys and I came out to hunt pheasants. Her jelly was amazing and she will be missed, but we know that we will see her smiling face once again. May God bless you and help you always remember her sweet spirit.

To my favorite grade school teacher. You were the reason I enjoyed coming to school everyday. I so loved all our art classes with you. And you made Jr High the best before we had to walk into an unknown high school in Beach. You were always proud of all of us. I will never forgot when I was in high school you called on me many times to dog sit and stay at your house for the weekend. I loved it, most well trained dog that loved my company and let's not forget I got to watch cable tv (which I had only 3 channels at my house). I want to thank you for being a big part of my childhood life and I will never stop telling people who my favorite teacher of all time was! Until we meet again. Prayers to all of your family.

As students, many teachers will pass through our lives without remembrance. Yet, a special few will leave a lasting impression. Thank you for being one of the special teachers who will live on forever in the minds of the students you have touched.
Mrs. Dahl, I will always remember you.
