Terry "Smitty" Allen Smith
October 22, 1951 - October 8, 2020

Residence: Williston, ND

Terry “Smitty” Smith was born October 22, 1951 in Williston, ND to Arthur (Tommy) and Jacqueline (Jackie) Smith. He was raised in Williston, educated and graduated from Williston High School with the class of 1969. He went on to complete two more years of Welding Technology school in Wahpeton, ND.

Smitty was drafted into the US Army May 1971 and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War, in Indochina until March 1972. He shot expert on the M-16 and received the National Defense Service medal along with the Vietnam Service medal. He was honorably discharged in 1976.

Upon returning home to the family farm after the service, Smitty met Rhonda Fosness and they married July 21, 1973 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Williston, ND. They made their home on the farm in Eastfork Township, Williams County. Together they raised two children Jennifer and Christina. Smitty farmed the land and grew crops of wheat, rye and alfalfa. He also owned and worked Smitty’s Welding Service and S&B Sandblasting. Several years later Smitty added Charolais cattle to the farm which required early mornings, late nights and a lot of hard work. His marriage to Rhonda ended after 22 years. Smitty retired his two businesses and created two more, Eastfork Gravel and Smith Water Depot.

He truly loved the outdoors and many outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting deer, elk and pheasant. He loved riding snowmobiles and rode trails in Island Park, Idaho and raced his drag sleds in Minnesota.

Smitty was a huge Vikings fan, every Sunday there was football on the tv. He attended some games at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He loved and admired his car collection which consisted of a 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette Convertible, 2010 Camaro yellow with racing stripes like Bumblebee and a 2015 Corvette Convertible Sting Ray.

Smitty is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Smith, Christina (Ian) Jones; grandchildren, Dylan Smith and Greta Jones; Sister Karen (Larry) Gehering.

He was preceded in death by his parents Tommy and Jackie Smith; son, Zachary Smith; daughter Angela Smith.

On October 8, 2020, at the age of 68, Smitty has permanently gone fishing.

Was saddened to see the loss of Smitty. Waited on him for years at Home of Economy and we had a great many visits. Such a very nice guy. And about everytime he'd buy his water softener salt which was put outside on our back loading dock for pickup, I'd usually have to call him the next day to remind him to get his salt he forgot to get( smile). RIP Smitty & much sympathy to the family.

Saddened to learn of Terry's passing.
We shared many a good time in the early days. Smitty and I shot a few birds along the Little Muddy over the years. He worked hard and played the same. We even go back to his 55 Chevy days! Rest in Peace my good friend!
