Alden "Coup" Chris Nehring
December 14, 1932 - August 8, 2021

Place of Birth: Kenmare, North Dakota
Residence: Tioga, North Dakota
Age: 88

Alden “Coup” Chris Nehring passed away peacefully in Tioga, ND late Sunday, August 8th, 2021 while surrounded by loved ones and his new great-granddaughter at the age of 88.

Coup was born in Bowbells, ND on December 14th, 1932 to Lil & Del Nehring. He attended school and graduated from Bowbells High School in 1950. He played basketball during HS and worked for his father at Standard Oil. During these years he met his soulmate Eleanor Rice. Early in their relationship they spent time riding horses in the country and going on dates. They were married in 1951 in Bowbells.

Coup then served his country in the US Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. Upon his return from service, he and Eleanor moved to Ray in 1956 where he was a bulk oil dealer for Standard Oil. In 1959, he began his career with the US Postal Service as a clerk in the Ray Post Office. He then served as the officer in charge in Crosby, worked in the Williston & Tioga offices. In 1980 he became the Postmaster in Ross before being named Postmaster in Ray in 1982 where he served until his retirement in 1989.

One of Coup’s greatest passions was everything to do with quarter horses. He raised horses for many years and loved traveling to horse shows with his family. He was active in the horse sale business since 1970 and became full time after retirement. He served as the President of the ND Quarter Horse Association. He was a longtime member of the MonDak Quarter Horse Association and served as a judge for more than 30 years.

Coup captivated so many through his love for others. He was a great friend and mentor for all ages with his incredible listening skills and calm demeanor. He loved spending his mornings with his best friends at the Gas-N-All for coffee & cribbage, and became a man known for his impeccable storytelling! Later he did the same in Tioga.

Coup is survived by his loving wife & soulmate of nearly 70 years, Eleanor Nehring; sister, Joan Chrest; two children, Timothy (Steven Rieske) Nehring and Tammie (Greg) Thorsen; two grandchildren, Hannah Thorsen and Haley (Danys) Chartrand; and one great-grandchild, Gemma Grace Chartrand.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lil & Del Nehring; and brother, LaVerne Nehring

We are deeply saddened that we lost another horse friend. We have sold many horses over the years at Coups sales. We always were treated with fairness and such honesty and professionalism. If we would get close to the entry deadline and we hadn’t consigned any yet we would get a call from Coup to see what we were going to bring. I’ll never forget one of the last horses our mutual friend Gary Ruhnke sold, Coup told us that Gary was an honest horse person, sometimes too honest. Another thing that Coup used to say was the best color of a horse was fat. Coup took care of his consigners, we have all the catalogs and we were so blessed when he used our stud “gambler” on the catalog cover and posters one year as we bought him 23 years ago this fall from his sale. We will miss him a bunch and he was truly a prince among men.
