Dale William Mullin was born in Sidney, Montana on October 16, 1955, the son of William Dale Mullin and Louise (Taylor) Mullin. The second child of four, he grew up in Lambert, Montana. Dale was always a quiet boy and grew up to be a man of few words.
As a little boy, Dale’s summers were spent using his imagination. He would build forts with his friends all around Lambert. One summer, he participated in the little britches rodeo and won a belt buckle. From that day on, he always wore Levi jeans, western shirts, and cowboy boots. As he got older, he started working the fields with his dad and older brother Dave Mullin. He often rescued bunnies and baby deer out in the middle of the field while summer fallowing. Dale enjoyed playing basketball growing up. As a teen, he and his close friends would go on fun adventures and make mischief through the town of Lambert. Dale enjoyed snowmobiling and hunting. He would drive around hunting, “looking for the big one!”
Dale loved cows and horses, and would work the summers at the V-A ranch in Enid, Montana, helping Fritz Rehbein and family breaking in horses and working cattle.
Dale graduated high school in Lambert in 1973. After high school, he went to work in the oilfield. He started with Circle A drilling as a green horn, and eventually worked his way up to driller. While working in the first oil boom for many years with his friend Cody Mavity, Dale got the nick name “Buzzard” and the name stuck with everyone that worked with him on the rigs.
In 1977, Dale met Lisa, the woman that became his wife for 46 years, at the CQ bar in Lambert. Dale and Lisa got married in 1978 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Lambert, Montana. Later in life they had two boys of their own, Troy Mullin and Tristan Mullin.
After the oil boom settled down in the early 80’s, Dale drove truck for John and Patti Prevost hauling gravel for a short time before returning to the farm and ranch that his dad had. Dale’s dad gave him a start in the cattle business, and from there he grew his small family-raised cattle and crops alongside his dad and brother for the rest of his years. Dale finally settled for the life where his heart always was.
Dale passed away on Sunday March 31, 2024 at St Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, Montana with family by his side.
Dale is survived by his wife, Lisa of Lambert, Montana; his sons Troy of Lambert and Tristian of Bozeman; brother Dave (Merle) Mullin of Lambert; sisters Dana (Lloyd) Dopp of Helena and Darla (Kenny) Hill of Lambert; aunts Kay Thornton of Sidney, Phillis Runyon of Twin Cities, OH, and Connie (Jean) Bankey; uncle Jimmy (Doris) Mullin of Sidney; and many other family members.
