We gather today to honor and remember the life of Lawrence Eugene Speldrich, a man who touched the lives of so many through his kindness, wisdom, and grit. Lawrence passed away on March 19, 2025, at the age of 73, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 15, 1951, in Sykeston, North Dakota, to Eugene and Anne Speldrich. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene, his mother, Anne, and his brother, David.
Lawrence is survived by his wife of many years, Kathy Speldrich, whom he married on December 4, 1989. Together, they raised a beautiful family, and Kathy was always by his side. Lawrence is also survived by his children: Tonya Schmitt (husband John Schmitt), Trevor Speldrich (wife Suzie Speldrich), LeAnn Stasiowski (husband Kenneth Stasiowski), and Lawrence Jr. (fiancé Brook Sheehan), Leland Speldrich, Eugene Speldrich, Robert Speldrich, and Kayland Speldrich. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his brother Vernon Speldrich, and his niece Misty Speldrich and nephew Michael Speldrich.
Lawrence’s journey began in Sykeston, North Dakota, where he was raised in a small community, attending Catholic church and serving as an altar boy. His early years instilled in him an undeniable work ethic that would guide him throughout his life. After graduating, Lawrence joined the Army National Guard in 1969 as a combat engineer, serving during the Vietnam War era. His eight years of service were marked by devotion, and during his time, he saved the life of another, an act of heroism that left him with a severe back injury, ultimately leading to his retirement from the Guard.
In his younger years, Lawrence worked alongside his father, helping to build roads in the Badlands near Medora and working in the oilfields with Speldrich Trucking. He even served as a city cop in Carrington, North Dakota, for a time. In the late 1970s, Lawrence and his first wife, Vicky, moved to Sidney, Montana, where they raised their children, Tonya and Trevor.
Later in life, Lawrence met Kathy Lund in Grassy Butte, North Dakota, and they became partners in life and in raising a large family. They lived in South Heart, North Dakota, and Sidney, Montana, and raised their six children together. Lawrence’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own trucking company, K&L Transport, where he traveled across the United States, hauling everything from steel and grain to honeybees. He always credited Kathy for standing by him through thick and thin, supporting his success, and making his dreams possible.
Lawrence’s legacy is one of love, wisdom, and devotion to his family. He had an incredible ability to lead by example, offering his endless wisdom, and teaching his children what honest hard-work and true character meant. He was a man with a sharp wit and a great sense of humor, always bringing laughter and support to those around him. His ability to comfort others through his presence was something that will never be forgotten.
Lawrence’s greatest strength was his deep devotion in providing for his family. He lived his life helping us all to find our way and to help us plan for the road ahead—building a way with his blood sweat and tears. His family was his greatest joy, and he took pride in each and every one of them.
As we reflect on his life, we find comfort in knowing that Lawrence lived a life of purpose, surrounded by those he loved. We remember the countless lessons he imparted, the love he shared, and the laughter he gave us all. His memory will live on in his wife and children, grandchildren, and all those who were touched by his life.
As we say goodbye to Lawrence, we take solace in the words of 2 Timothy 4:7-8: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Lawrence fought the good fight, and now he rests in the arms of his Savior, free from pain and full of peace.
Rest in peace, Lawrence. You will be forever loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
