Ralph (Lockwood) Humenyik, 68, longtime area sportscaster of rural Williston, ND, died Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at his rural Williston residence.

Ralph was born June 24, 1948 to Steve & Gerry Humenyik in Massillon, Ohio where he attended primary school through high school. After high school Ralph attended Brown Broadcasting College in Washington D.C.
June 3, 1968 was the first game of his broadcasting career. During Ralph's years with the radio stations, he worked for KTGO,KDSR, KGCX, and KEYZ. While at KTGO in Tioga he implemented a very popular Saturday morning radio show "Coaches Corner" which he also brought with him when he moved to Williston years later. Ralph announced games for area schools all over NW North Dakota and NE Montana. He was known as the "Voice of the Tetons", "Voice of the Coyotes", "Voice of the Keybirds", and also many years known as the "Voice of the Wolves". Ralph was privileged to announce 3 Babe Ruth World Series in his years announcing games. His last game he announced in his career was this year at the Championship of the 2016 Babe Ruth World Series in Williston. This was game 8100 of his career. For over 30 years he was involved in announcing for the races for the Williston Basin Racing Association, he also announced numerous demolition derbies in the Williston Basin. On July 25, 2002 Ralph was awarded a Special Recognition Award form the North Dakota High School Coaches Association as the Sports Director for KDSR Radio in Williston.
In 1975 he met Bev Wolla. They were married June 3, 1976. In 1986 Ralph, Bev and their two sons moved to Williston. He continued to call baseball, basketball, and football games around the area. At this time he also started advertising sales at the local radio station. During the time of announcing he found a love for coaching legion baseball in Tioga. The family spent time fishing & camping when the kids were young. When Ralph was not working he liked to spend time golfing, playing amateur basketball & couples softball & bowling. For many years he was involved in playing darts. One of Ralph's favorite past times in his younger years around the holidays was playing Santa for the Williston Chamber of Commerce and walking the streets and dispensing candy to children Although one time Santa was not careful where he parked his sleigh and received a parking ticket
Ralph is survived by his wife of 40 years Beverly Humenyik, his mother Gerry Humenyik, his son Shane & Beth Humenyik and their three children Brandon (11), Leah (8), and Holden (6) and his son Dean & Trisha Humenyik and their son Landon (6).

Ralph's play by play voice will live on in all the games that were recorded by us parents. A talented voice like his does not come around very often and he will be missed for years to come.

I was very saddened to learn of Ralph's passing.
I first met Ralph decades ago when I was doing sports for a Devils Lake radio station and Ralph was at KLPM in Minot. We were colleagues and co workers for well over 30 years in Williston.
Prayers to the family. I have wonderful memories and you will be missed. RIP Ralph.

Ralph and I spent 13 years at Manchester Schools together. He was a quiet, kind, steady guy. The kind of person all of us were glad to count as friend. To his family and mother, Geri, my condolences. Gone too soon, but will be missed by all, and loved forever.

We did not have an opportunity to actually meet Ralph, but we felt that we knew him and that he was our friend from having listened to his announcing the Coyotes and Keybirds games this past spring and summer. We were in Texas where Parks was being treated at a cancer clinic during baseball season and could not attend any of our grandson's games in North Dakota. Ralph made us smile many times by telling us during the ballgames that he hoped Parks was doing better, and he helped us "see" our grandson playing through his wonderfully descriptive voice on the radio. We had no idea he was so sick while he was making an effort to lift us up in our struggle. Your husband, father, and grandfather was a good man. We know he will be missed by many lives he has touched through the years which include the Callan family from Georgia.

Prayers to Ralph's family. So many of our sports memories have Ralph as a part of them--from Dave's early coaching days to Doug's playing days. Ralph was great to the athletes, and to the parents. He was a true professional, but there are also some funny bus stories that just bring a chuckle! His passing is a huge loss to his profession and to the community. Our sympathy to his family. God Bless.

I am so sorry to hear of Ralph's passing. I have had a business relationship with Ralph during my banking career for about 30 years. I always looked forward to Ralph stopping by to sell more sports advertising. I really enjoyed talking sports with him. He was one of a kind and I will really miss him and his great radio broadcasting voice. Rest in peace Ralph.

Haven't seen Ralph for a few years. But I got to know him very well. He invited me to do basketball ball games with him, especially when New Town and Watford City played.. I loved those nights. RIP ole friend..

The press boxes of western North Dakota aren't the lively places they once were with the passing of wonderful broadcasters like Ralph and Dickinson's Lee Leiss. As a Bismarck sportswriter, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Ralph in the press box, because he was always professional in his approach and thoroughly prepared. That, of course, allowed me to pick up useful information on the Keybirds or Coyotes. I sometimes wonder how Ralph found enough hours in a day to travel with teams, broadcast games, do statistics and fit in the rest of life. It was commonplace to have Williston coaches say "talk to Ralph" when I was in search of statistics. You leave a big hole in the varsity lineup, Ralph. A big, big hole.
Blessings to the family. At times like this, it's time to depend heavily on the Lord.
